Specialist Clinical Toxicological advice
On-call NPIS consultant clinical toxicologists are based at all NPIS provider Units. The 24-hour telephone service, staffed by trained Specialists in Poisons Information, is based at four Units - Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Newcastle - with additional on-call consultant staff based in York and London, between them covering the whole UK.
All consultant clinical toxicologists have day-to-day responsibility for patient care in specialist poisons Units in UK teaching hospitals. They provide advice on more complex cases of poisoning, or on rare or unusual poisoning presentations. Some 1,500 such consultations occur annually.
